Read Luke 15:11-32
- Comparing yourself to the two brothers in this story, who are you most like? Why?
Go around and ask everyone to give their impression of the brothers and then share how they relate.
- What do you think the people you work with or go to school with, would say about the younger son’s decision to ask for his inheritance early? What do you think about his decision?
Many people might say he was being selfish, not thinking about his future (right now minded), immature, hasty but many others might say he was being smart.
- What stages does the younger son go through on his pilgrimage? How does the son’s downfall teach us of sin?
The son goes off to a distant country (no accountability). He squanders his wealth (carelessness). He longs for food. He “comes to his senses”. Decides to return to his father. Realizes his sin. Repents. Forgiven.
- How can you relate to the Prodigal Son’s poor financial decisions? Have you ever felt like you made a poor financial decision that you could not get out of? Explain.
Go around and ask everyone to share.
5. What are some of the results of the decision the son makes in verses 17 and 18?
Go around and ask everyone to share.
6. Describe the father’s response to the Son’s return. What does that say to you about the decisions you can make to come back to God in different areas of your life?
The father runs to meet the son with open arms. He rejoices and celebrates the son’s return. In the same way God, our heavenly father, runs to meet us when we repent and return to Him.
7. How do you sense God calling you to get closer to him? How can you respond to Him?
Go around and ask everyone to share.
